This month is also National Osteoporosis Awareness and Prevention Month. Osteoporosis is a condition of having weak bones. It affects about 55 percent of Americans age 50 and older. Of the 10 million Americans estimated to have osteoporosis, eighty percent of those affected are women. Although osteoporosis is often thought of as an older person’s disease, it can strike at any age! Think you may not be getting enough calcium in your diet, below is a quick recipe to help build stronger bones.
The recipe below describes a fruity banana shake that can be used for breakfast or as a snack.
*Banana Breakfast Shake
1½ cups fat free milk ½ teaspoon vanilla extract
1 peeled and sliced medium banana, frozen
(optional: ¼ teaspoon almond extract cinnamon for garnish)
Directions: To freeze banana, wrap sliced banana in plastic wrap or place in a freezer storage bag. Freeze several hours or overnight. Mix all ingredients in a blender, except the cinnamon. Blend until smooth, for about 20 seconds. Pour into glass and sprinkle ground cinnamon on top, if desired.
*The recipe above was adapted from National Dairy Council “Cut Calories Not Calcium” (2000).
